girl crush…

May 18, 2012

welcome to today’s latest edition of girl crush. i cannot contain my excitement that my stunning friend, anna ziebarth agreed to stop by gni today.

mother to zoe and lux, anna runs heavy petal flowers, orange county’s go-to floral design company for weddings and special occasions, with her equally beautiful sister, jena.

i’ve known anna for over ten years {gulp}, and she is literally the COOLEST person i know.

a trend setter like no one else, anna has an effortless, rocker chic, with an edge of california beach, girlie-girl style, that if she were a celebrity, paparazzi and fashion blogs would be following her every sartorial step.

and although the comparisons are often made, anna was our it girl way before alexa chung came onto the scene.

anna was also working the mid-century modern look in her sick, decked out pad, practically, at the TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY.

like i said, this girl, is a style trailblazer.

let’s pick her brain, and get to know a little more about my anna.

no. 1: name your 5 bottom of the jar products?

epicuren kukui nut lotionepicuren x-treme screen sunscreenlily lambert roll on perfume #22dior show mascaraaquaphor- i use this for everything cuts, scrapes, dry skin, lip gloss…..you name it

no. 2: who is your style icon and why?

rachel bilsoni want everything she owns.

no. 3 what is your spring fashion must have item?

i just bought a pair of earnest sewn esra jeans and i’ve been in them every day, and i’d like a pair of warby parker reading glasses- since my recent failed eye exam i’ve turned into quite the eyeglasses connoisseur.

no. 4: finish the sentence….i can never leave the house without:

my ritual cleanse insulated re-usable shopping bags and Iphone.

no. 5: what advice would you give your 25-year-old self?

“life is about to break your heart into a thousand pieces, but just remember to never lose sight of who you are and who you want to be. the journey will be long but worth it and when you look back you won’t regret a thing.”

no. 6: what would you do with 2 weeks off?

hawaii never gets old for me. i’d love to do one week on oahu with my daughters just surfing and sunning and the second week just relaxing, eating and reading at the four seasons maui with my boyfriend kevin.

no. 7: give me your 5 deserted island items…

my daughters zoe and lux, and kevin my boyfriend (they’re getting grouped as one), tyler rose bikinis, my canon DSLR camera- it’s big and bulky, but never disappoints in capturing my priceless memories, arugula- I can eat it morning, noon and night!, and my jura coffeemakera Xmas present from my girls and ex husband last year, and it makes the best coffee ever, i don’t go out for coffee, i go home.

no. 8: you and your sister, jena, run one of the most in-demand floral design businesses in southern california, heavy petal flowers; people are still talking about the kick-ass flowers from my wedding {seriously- i had the baddest, most rock star, hot-pink bouquet to date}, how do you keep such a successful business flourishing while at the same time, raise two incredible daughters, find time for your relationship, and manage to make it look so free-flowing and fluent? you never break a sweat anna nor cop an attitude.

when I was younger i thought i had to do it all. i was pretty overwhelmed and not really pulling it off. i’ve been humbled, i learned to ask for help, keep things simple and learned to give myself a break.

no. 9: what would you say is the most important for someone going into a business with a family member?

remember they aren’t just your family member they are your business partner. agree on what’s expected of each other before you do anything and always remain professional. early in our business, there was an ordering error and when it was discovered, i reverted back to sisterly squabbling – i had a very unprofessional freak out on my sister jena at the flower mart and afterwards was pretty embarrassed about it. now, jena and i both look back on this memory and can’t help but bust up laughing. i’ve learned it doesn’t matter who i am dealing with, my business partner, our clients, our vendors, always remain professional even in the most stressful situations.

no. 10: what are your favorite things about living in southern california?

i love surfing with my girls, eating at true food kitchen, riding bikes, celia’s breakfast bowls at mother’s market and everyone i love lives here and if they don’t, they love to visit.

no. 11: what are your least favorite things about southern california?

the reputation we have acquired….. i’ve lived in orange county my entire life and yet people are surprised to find that out. i grew up in a laid back so-cal environment…what happened to that way of life?

thank you so much anna girl. i adore you.

i’m off to utah for the weekend m’loves. i loved the weigh in on the wedding outfits…i actually took an alternative 4th route from the three options…

photos to come.

have a weekend most happy, and i’ll see you on the other side of sunday.

top of the hour: hunkiest!

August 17, 2011

no post on tuesday. i had a whirlwind trip to arizona to support hunkiest as he made his television début answering questions about the recent arizona fires. his company helps re-seed the land devastated by these natural and sometimes, manmade disasters. all in an effort to bring the beautiful country and wildlife back to what is was.

i have been to scottsdale many times, but i never get used to how stupid pretty it is…even through a car window.

although it’s never a style i’d choose for my house {i accent color my all-white house with various shades of 0ff-white}, the hotel did have a cool, southwest aesthetic. these chairs were digging me.

to ease pre-camera jitters, we had drinks and two rounds of flirting at the onyx bar.

coaster riddles: hunky picked food, i picked rest. he won, we followed with dinner at talavera, and called it an early night.

h.d. tv isn’t kind to sleep-deprived, puffy eyes.

we were up before the roosters rattlesnakes, to get to the studio before 6am.

i was supposed to be checking on the microphone placement. i was….sort of.

my man in action: he was superman handsome and batman cool.

i couldn’t stop taking pictures. i was like a mom at a swim meet.

a romantic goodbye in terminal 3, and i am now back in southern california.

wednesday happy to you m’loves.

buenos dias mi amigos

July 18, 2011

i’m back.

from the lack of posting and tweeting it should have been apparent i was removed and relaxing.

just what the 4 different doctors ordered.

here’s what bliss looks like to me:

a patio with an ocean {hidden in photo} and palm trees wishing you good morning and goodnight.

sand, sea and salty friends making breakfast’s finest companions.

in the distance our cabana beds await for afternoon napping and silly.

mexican coffee and huevos rancheros compete with the pacific’s baby’s blues.

no need to leave the resort for tours in punta mita’s exotic wilderness or journey out ziplining adventure. the walk to our room alone was a trek through iguana-ville and a jungle in stereo sound.

happy girl.

happy girl. hunky boy.

not retouched. {kills me, cause i look like shit}

lobby love.

just plain, old fashion love.

sad girl leaving the hotel.

so my twitch actually went away. we arrived home saturday night, and then next morning when i awoke  twitchy was gone.

sunday consisted of an all day celebratory family dance party {beast included}

unfortunately waking up today, twitchy has returned.

oh well, at least i had a beautiful week.

monday happy to you m’loves.

popsicles poolside

May 20, 2010

i exhaled any last remnants of grief into the bottom of the pool this afternoon.

my toes are now webbed from the time spent eeling and dolphining my way back and forth under the bridge from hh’s chair to my secret alcove of imaginary fish friends.

splash splash all day long. swimming away from all the monsters back home.

just like it’s impossible to sneeze with your eyes open, i’m incapable of swimming without grinning ear to ear; especially the deeper the water. maybe that’s why the “adult pool” suddenly morphed into the “katie pool” as the day passed.

no bother to me. such a pity the others are missing such a wonderful underwater party. everyone looks beautiful and feels weightless subaquatic. we i just bounce around all day with my own personal snuggly undersea trampoline. i make floppy flips, splashy backward somersaults, shimmy out a number or two from grease 2, and bee-bop to the steel drum band at the bar.

utterly exhausted. a respite: drying out under the cabana for rest, reprieve, and re-fueling for the afternoon’s repeat sessions.

start to notice though there weren’t any patrons for the latter performances.

hmmmm? maybe next time something more recent, like teen witch?

bringing home silly for souvenirs.

accessory for summer is the uncontrollable giggle.

if you don’t have one, get thee one now!

sultry nights

May 18, 2010

rum, rum wherever you are. rum away from all your fears and cares.

languid meals lit by candles. slow motion camera as he lifts his wine glass from table to lips.

pinot noir smiling out the corners of his mouth.

pinot noir kisses when the waiter isn’t looking.

legs curled under my hips fashion a sofa into a love seat.

how silly of us not to eat with toothpicks at home.

here, can i offer you another plantain dunked in honey, honey?

misty rain calls for bare feet; no matter how pretty your party dress may be.

the wet tiles are still warm the day’s sweltering heat in the shade.

off to dream under a swirling fan, in a pitch black room, listening to thunder and waves bowl for strikes.

Well, one out of two…..

October 5, 2009

So much for my bachelorette weekend of late night debauchery, dancing on bar tops, downing shots with the gusto of a sorority pledge, and middle of the night raiding of the mini bar. Six seconds in to settling into my assigned seat I started to sneeze. It hasn’t stopped. Along the way, my sneeze has accumulated a fever, runny nose, sore throat, headache and over all cranky disposition. F*ck Me!!! Of course, being the eternal optimist did I pack prepared to get sick?!?!?? Of course not. No, I do not bring Tylenol or NyQuil, but I DO pack 7 different strands of pearls and 3 cocktails rings (did i mention this is Wyoming?) And forget about just trotting down to the nearest Rite Aid, on our way to the hotel from the airport we do not pass one pharmacy or drugstore, but we DO see a baby bear cub and his mother (swear to god.) 2914789930042323861S500x500Q85

But, oh how they took care of me at the Four Seasons. One sound of my sniffle, and without having to say a word a tray of hot tea, crackers and jelly beans was delivered to my room with a sweet note  to “feel better soon.” The following afternoon I had a message checking on my sneezing status, and inquiring if i needed anymore medicine or tea. I was able to achieve 80 minutes of Nirvana in their exquisite hotel spa. Jenny, the massage therapist, undid the last three months of tension and toil courtesy of my spin bike and pilates classes. As nice as the massage was, I think my favorite part is the post treatment time when we all convene, faces glistening and hydrated, hair oiled and slick, temperaments tame and giddy. Reclining by a fire, under those cozy blankets when you’re so unfettered the chat and giggles  just stream out. Getting hammered on ginger tea (my only imbibing all weekend,) laughing until your stomachs hurt, crying until your stomachs hurt.

So, while i didn’t stay out past my bedtime with the rest of the girls drinking those second and third bottles of wine, “bumper car-ing” their way back to the room as Amanda so aptly recounted, eating pizza under the covers at 9am, and drinking tequila on a saddle at the Cowboy Bar. I DID  get my rest and relaxation. For that I am grateful and considerate it a successful girls weekend away.
