ring in the SPRING!

March 20, 2015

jasmine-1-of-1

she’s here!

my favorite season, the best time of year: spring!

even the word “spring” brings a smile to my face; i dare you to say it without the corners of your mouth delighting upward into an arc of happy.

and although i’m aware there is still major snow and frost in much of the country, nary slush or sleet should prevent you from enjoying our vernal equinox.

spring is a state of mind, not a weather forecast: it’s a fresh start, a rebirth, an opportunity to grow; an optimism and new vigor awakening after a long winter’s hibernation.

so how do you “ring in the spring?”

for me it always starts with our house.

my spring cleaning is more of a purge: clothes, food, old electronics, and any other cabinet clogging items i haven’t thought of in a year are donated or thrown out; never underestimate the power of a closet gut to make you feel like a superhero.

not ready for a major household overhaul?

start smaller.

this week i cut off stems from our backyard jasmine bush–last year’s $4.99 trader joes purchase whose vines now serpentine up the whole backside of our house, fragrancing the porch with a sweet, sunny aroma.

i brought the lone stems inside, dropped them in various pink goblets throughout the downstairs, and, clouds or no clouds outside, our house feels and smells like spring.

here are a few other ways i’m “ringing in the spring.”

puregrass

it’s no secret i’m a sucker for a seasonal scent; even in my cleaning products. the pure grass scent from good home company is a staple for me this time of year. we use the dryer sheets, the laundry detergent, and the vacuum balls to give the house a fresh, clean, green aroma.

we are also using this soap in our nursery.

mug

lasting no more than a month or two, this time of year brings a craving for teatime to rival my typical, 2pm binge on black coffee.

mighty leaf organic spring jasmine and teavana’s wild orange blossom herbal tea are two of my post-lunch favorites.

and i’m thinking these initial mugs from anthropologie are the perfect vessels for that afternoon recess.

kiwi

even my skin gets its own version of spring cleaning. now is the time i bust out mario badescu’s kiwi face scrub to start unearthing the permafrost of dry and dehydrated skin brought on by winter.

i also use tata harper’s resurfacing mask and juice beauty green apple brightening pads for major exfoliation.

burt’s bees cucumber facial wipes are well-stocked in my refrigerator; every morning while my coffee brews i treat myself to a quick cucumber scented facial-the puffy and fatigue instantly evicted from my eyes and jowls.

  seda

my big splurge this time of year is always a jo malone orange blossom candle.

pricey?

yes.

worth it?

hell YES!

this clementine/water lily scent is instant prozac for my disposition. some girls have that favorite red lipstick, that short black skirt, or that stiletto pump to revamp their mood….mine comes in the form of a candle.

less expensive but just as pirouette-inducing is the moss + mint candle from nest; think minty garden fresh infused with apple blossom.

the cutting garden from seda france is another one i love; with one stroke of a match a fragrant green bouquet permeates the house; one king’s lane is having a sale on a ton of seda france candles.

and i’m a total fool {both for the scent and the price} of mrs. meyer’s basil scented clean soy candle; i’m always asked about these candles when i put them out for entertaining.

nailpolish

for outside the front door i’m looking at all of the pretty, new, spring 2015 nail collections to bring the primavera party to my toes and fingers.

zoya’s spring delight practically reinvents the rainbow for your feet.

and essie‘s latest spring medley has me unpacking all my peep-toe platforms {totally appropriate for a woman 35 weeks pregnant.}

sping

i don’t require major renovation or second mortgages to ring the spring into my life; a flower here, some dryer sheets there, maybe a new coat of polish, and i’m set.

how will you be ringing in the spring m’loves?

wishing you a weekend of hop in your step and posy in your play.

see you on the other side of sunday.

love,

katie

girl crush: leigh beach

don’t let that pretty face fool you; this beauty queen has a mouth on her that makes sailors ask for smelling salts; and i say that with complete admiration and envy.

on today’s latest installment of girl crush i give you the hilarious, charming, gorgeous, albeit right-winged, and talented leigh beach.

leigh is a fellow spin instructor at equinox newport beach.  she has turned sunday mornings into a can’t-miss, rousing revival of great music, laughs, and ass-kicking.

she is my sister in sarcasm, a partner in profanity, and a loving soul who is completely devoted to those she cares for.

i feel so lucky to call her “friend.”

1459664_10152252635019361_1953921259_n

leigh is the wife to political consultant, eric; and together they happily parent three of the greatest kids: rylan, sawyer, saxon.

you can keep up with their gut-busting adventures on leigh’s popular blog, three before thrity.

when not taking us on hills & sprints, getting to carpool on time, and hobnobbing with political elite, leigh also finds room in her whacky schedule to work at lululemon at fashion island.

today she’s made the time to give us a little behind-the-scenes look into her full life.

trader

name 5 bottom of the jar products?

Trader Joes Coconut Body Butter Lotion. It’s got that “I just landed in OC from Waikiki smell.”

L’Oreal mascara. It’s the only brand I’ve ever used. I don’t believe in spending a lot of money on mascara…so I’ve never tried anything else. And I never leave home without it on.

Batiste Dry Shampoo. A girlfriend who also happens to be my hair stylist has finally convinced me not to wash every day…I use this dry shampoo between washes. It smells great and keeps my hair from every looking greasy.

Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom and Honey perfume. That reminds me. I’m all out. #anxiety

Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc. “Bottom of the bottle” counts too, right?

boho

who is your style icon and why?

Can I have more than one? Twiggy. Kate Moss. Drew Barrymore. Rachel Zoe and Nicole Richie. I love bohemian style…It’s so effortless and cool. But I got my appreciation of all things fashion from my mom. I’m pretty sure she wore heels to the delivery room…

62da2fd934b6d8a86fc671cdc9e67e97

 how do you define luxury?

Dancing until way past midnight and hiring a babysitter to get up with the kids in the morning. Sleeping through the night. Sleeping in until 11am. The automatic tailgate button on my car.

books

what’s the last book you read and loved?

“Naptime is the new happy hour” and “Sippy cups are not for chardonnay.

vice

 what are your vices?

Goat cheese and chips and guacamole. And country music concerts.

finish the sentence…

.i can never leave the house without: underwear. I’ve never been able to go commando. Now that I have children in elementary school, I’m sure they appreciate this too.

 suncreen

what advice would you give your 25 year old self?

Slow down. It’s not a race. Wear more sunscreen.  And, that tattoo you got a few years ago? Yeah, they’re calling it a “tramp stamp” now.

hawaii

what does your ideal 2 weeks off look like?

Hawaii with the whole fam. On the beach every day. Dinner out. Every. Single. Night.

 desert

give me your 5 deserted island items….people and things?

Me, Eric, the kids. And a babysitter. Shit. That’s 6. Oh and toilet paper. Is it bad to swap a kid for TP?

luzury

what is your idea of perfect happiness?

A house with AC. A kitchen with an island that’s big enough for the whole family to gather around. A king-sized bed. His/Her closets. His/Her bathroom sinks. I believe these are the keys to a happy marriage. {Still working on Eric for #s 1 and 2}

home

family members excluded, what is your most prized possession?

It’s a toss-up between our home and my college diploma. Both I’m very proud to own. I almost didn’t graduate from high school on time but I graduated from college with honors. Just took me a little longer to get my shit together.

sevemties

in what historical era would you most like to have lived?

The 70s. But then I really wouldn’t have made it out of high school.

fav

what are your favorite things about living in southern california?

Fish tacos. The beach. Flip flops year round. Only owning one umbrella for a family of 5 and having no idea where it is. Riding our bikes down to the peninsula. Being near my family. I grew up in San Diego with my mom. She moved up here after my kids were born. My dad lives here too and both my parents help us out so much with our kids.

taz

what are your least favorite things about southern california?

The keeping-up-with-the-joneses mentality…though my guess is that probably exists in a lot of communities outside of So Cal too. Not showing enough love to my boots and jackets. Sky-high tax rates. Sky-high gas prices. A democrat for a Governor. Sorry, what was the original question? The obsession with USC Football Sorry, my ACC-loving husband jumped on my questionnaire.

see? how can you not LOVE this girl!?!

thank you so much leigh beach for letting me adore you.

your wit, honesty, and overall lovelieness make you even more crushable.

it’s friday i’m in love…

July 18, 2014

shiny, happy, friday to you my doll-babies!

another week in the books, another year older for my most significant of others.

last night, alongside family from out-of-town, we celebrated with chocolate cake and mint gelato; hunkiest’s two most favorite foods.

the weekend foresees to be one, long spree of extolling the people i love; but first here are few of my friday favorite’s:

cea97a79f40542b0d7e35a17f7357672

i am digging jenny lewis’ new single “just one of the guys.”

her video with anne hathaway, kristen stewart, and brie larson {in and out of drag,} is a sweet, silly counterbalance to, a lyrically, melancholly song. jenny lewis wrote the song the night after her father died.

brie larson, a girl crush of mine since her days on the united states of tara, more than makes up and cancels out my involuntarily gag reactions to kristen stewart and anne hatha-vain, in this fun video.

part

those who have been to my house have seen my fanaticism:

i’m addicted to the color white.

in all of its shades, moods, and variances, white makes me happier than any other ‘color’ in the paint box.

finally someone else feels this same fancy; in an article for THE LINE, master colorist donald kaufman, who with his wife taffy dahl {what a name!!?}, works with top architects and designers to create over 104 variable shades of white, talks about the power and beauty of this often “un-romantic,” misunderstood color.

pardon me while i swoon.

grace

this week i finished a great book, “ordinary grace” by william kent krueger; a coming of age story, about two young brothers during the summer of 1961, in a small town of minnesota, where death and loss are as common as the 90 degree heat. krueger’s message of grace, in both the young and the old, the tortured and the guilty, is one that has stayed with me for days and i know will linger on for months, maybe even years to come.

6909f686998619aa6f8cd248093e6802

tomorrow i’m getting my photos taken with the famous samantha friedman jacoby; samantha takes insane fitness photos, and i’m so excited to work with this talented genius.

i’ve been living on a diet of cigarette’s and spin bikes.

{oh and chocolate cake with mint gelato}

in truth, it’s just been a week of less peanut/almond butters {my crack} and more cardio.

except for last night i’ve made an enormous version of this salad for dinner every night this week; no cheese {which is like water boarding for me,} this bibb lettuce/tarragon combination is delicious and crazy easy to make.

although saturday night, post photo shoot, all bets are off, and i’m face-planting into a baking dish of brown sugar and butter.

i’m making this nectarine and plum crisp with oatmeal streusel to negate all the cardio and clean eating i’ve committed to this week.

 wish me luck angel-babies.

here’s to sucking it in, high eyebrows, and photoshop.

cheers to making a weekend splash so big, you get everyone else to join in your pool party!

see you on the other side of sunday m’loves.
