bouncing the bounce bursts…..

August 26, 2015

before (1 of 1)-5

wednesday happy to you m’loves.

since discovering my beloved bounce bursts test on animals i’ve been scouring the grocery aisles and google pages for a four-legged, friendly alternative.

to my unhandy dismay, the best i could come up with was a do-it-yourself concoction involving epsom salt + essential oils.

typically when i see the initials DIY, i break out in a rash and involuntarily vomit.

i DON’T-do-it-myself. i pay to have it done or i go without-i’m just not artful that way.

but even this “project” seemed kindergarten enough even for my ikea-averse brain.

before (1 of 1)-3

the hardest part was picking the scent.

nothing is going to smell as strong as those bounce/downey burst/crystals; they are artificially/chemically fragranced {i.e. toxic} therefore much more potent and longer lasting–and also more dangerous to your health.

that being said i had to be willing to forego the robust, {fraudulent} fresh-smelling house and clothes i had grown to love.

i chose a grapefruit + cinnamon combination.

i am washing hunkiest’s clothes too so it couldn’t be too floral and these were pretty inexpensive….around $3 each…some essential oils can get pricey.

before (1 of 1)-7

in a mixing bowl i added:

6 cups of the epsom salt.

+

 3o drops of grapefruit oil.

30 drops of cinnamon oil.

{adding more oil if you want a stronger scent.}

before (1 of 1)

after blending, i popped my crystals into an extra-large mason jar, and stuck it up next to the laundry soap.

i added 1 tablespoon of “salt,” straight in with the clothes for washing, and so far, so good.

our clothes aren’t stinky, and the salt makes them baby-kitten soft.

as stated earlier, the scent is nowhere near as strong as the bounce bursts-even our neighbors could smell the “malibu sunrise” aroma of those suckers, but our consciences and our laundry are both clean.

before (1 of 1)-8

because i had solved this homemaking and moral scruple, last night i rewarded my handy do-it-myself-self a solo trip to target.

of course, as i’m zippity doo dah’ing my way down the aisle i run, smack into the new display for these mrs. meyer’s laundry scent boostersleaping bunny certified fragrance bursts for your laundry.

{my deep, eye-rolling, shoulder-tossing exhalation}

so there you have it.

make your own like i did…or buy the mrs. meyer’s kind…like i will be in the future.

wednesday april fresh to you m’loves.

friday i’m in LOVE!!!

August 14, 2015

friday happy to you m’loves!

no, you’re not still tripping on last night’s portobello mushroom, i’m back for the second time this week.

i feel like i’m finally emerging from my self-ensconced, post-natal lair.

leaving the house for life outside of work and when the coffee runs out, is starting to happen more often.

i’m also resuming my crucial, uninterrupted time with my first girl, my heart, my love–my priscilla.

priscilla LOVES sutton…

case in point:

~a snippet of the hours of footage we have where priscilla watches over a newborn sutton.

she hasn’t left her wee charge since.

jones takes more of a hands-off, night’s watch approach; he guards the house, and minds the perimeter of the property–loving our girl from afar.

i adore these beasts more and more every day…..

here are few other things i’m loving on this fine friday:

tdm (1 of 1)

this week marked my first forray back towards pre-baby fitness.

i’m not looking for a certain number on the scale, or a previous sized pant; what i care most about is how i feel.

i want/need/will pay good money, and/or will perform circus animal tricks for more energy.

i miss moxie in my joints and muscles.

i long for a feeling of spontaneity in my legs, arms and back; rather than the deadweight of a napping, grizzly bear i’m currently carrying in my shoulders, neck, and hip flexors.

the dailey method is my remedy.

it’s no secret the dailey method {TDM} is my favorite barre class.–and yes i’ve even taught for this ice cream sundae of a studio–they are hands down the best barre studio around. no one pays more attention to form, safety, and alignment-you will NOT injure yourself in these classes {if you follow proper instruction and ask for modifications when necessary.}

shannon roberts, just one of the best girls EVER and luckily, my friend, taught the class, and effectively handed my “seat” to me.

i left the studio “lifted, toned, and stretched.”

there are currently 56 dailey method studios globally- i encourage you to try one out.

and if you don’t have a studio nearby…you can always purchase or stream their workouts

su

now on to my favorite subject: food.

i’ve been living off these two soups from trader joes: the organic creamy asparagus soup + the organic roasted tomatillo gazpacho; both are vegan, filling, and delicious.

i’m not sure how the asparagus soup is dairy free; it’s as creamy-tasting as cupcake frosting, but without costume change into waistband-free, sweat pants.

and although the gazpacho says to eat “chilled,” i heat it up nonetheless.

if i wanted it cold, i’d serve it over tortilla chips with melted cheese and call it “salsa.”

—chilled soup!??!?!—so stupid!!!!!

MTD-01229-9

and this could be my most favorite find of the year!

method PURE NAKED moisturizing body wash is the only grocery store/target/drugstore {mainstream consumer brand} body wash i’ve ever found that does not test on animals.

yes, you can buy specialty body washes at the grocery store, etc..but they’re always pricier, and typically available in scents that smell like yoga mats or tuna casserole.

this wash comes in surfside, magnolia {my favorite}, olive leaf {hunkiest’s favorite}, + a white tea scent.

it kills me that people lose their minds over cecil the lion {which deserves the outrage,} but in the next breath/post they’ll laud a company or product that tests on animals–which if you ask me, an entire life locked in a cage, poked, prodded, and poisoned {aka tortured} is still worse than a life spent roaming free in a national park until being mercilessly hunted down one night.

i’m not saying i’m perfect {i’m currently looking to replace my bounce bursts–found out they test on animals}–but, if animal cruelty is something you’re not down with, i believe a quick smartphone google of “cruelty free” the next time you go shopping can collectively make an impact.

now can someone please get me a gondola ride down from my soapbox?

Paper-Towns_soundtrack-cover

i leave with you some jams for your weekend audio pleasure:

i have to give credit to my friend, my mate in soul and jukebox, john p., for reminding how much i love the paper town’s soundtrack.

there isn’t one bad song on the album {do people still call them albums?}

if i had sam bruno’s “search party” on cassette, the ribbon would already be unraveled from so much play + rewind; i’m apologizing in advance to my classes for the search party overdose.

santigold’s “radio,” kindess’ version of “swinging party,” + alice boman’s heartbreaking “be mine” are my other favorites.

and you…always you m’loves–you of course are my favorites too!!

weekend happy to you….let’s go out having a swinging party shall we?

ring in the SPRING!

March 20, 2015

jasmine-1-of-1

she’s here!

my favorite season, the best time of year: spring!

even the word “spring” brings a smile to my face; i dare you to say it without the corners of your mouth delighting upward into an arc of happy.

and although i’m aware there is still major snow and frost in much of the country, nary slush or sleet should prevent you from enjoying our vernal equinox.

spring is a state of mind, not a weather forecast: it’s a fresh start, a rebirth, an opportunity to grow; an optimism and new vigor awakening after a long winter’s hibernation.

so how do you “ring in the spring?”

for me it always starts with our house.

my spring cleaning is more of a purge: clothes, food, old electronics, and any other cabinet clogging items i haven’t thought of in a year are donated or thrown out; never underestimate the power of a closet gut to make you feel like a superhero.

not ready for a major household overhaul?

start smaller.

this week i cut off stems from our backyard jasmine bush–last year’s $4.99 trader joes purchase whose vines now serpentine up the whole backside of our house, fragrancing the porch with a sweet, sunny aroma.

i brought the lone stems inside, dropped them in various pink goblets throughout the downstairs, and, clouds or no clouds outside, our house feels and smells like spring.

here are a few other ways i’m “ringing in the spring.”

puregrass

it’s no secret i’m a sucker for a seasonal scent; even in my cleaning products. the pure grass scent from good home company is a staple for me this time of year. we use the dryer sheets, the laundry detergent, and the vacuum balls to give the house a fresh, clean, green aroma.

we are also using this soap in our nursery.

mug

lasting no more than a month or two, this time of year brings a craving for teatime to rival my typical, 2pm binge on black coffee.

mighty leaf organic spring jasmine and teavana’s wild orange blossom herbal tea are two of my post-lunch favorites.

and i’m thinking these initial mugs from anthropologie are the perfect vessels for that afternoon recess.

kiwi

even my skin gets its own version of spring cleaning. now is the time i bust out mario badescu’s kiwi face scrub to start unearthing the permafrost of dry and dehydrated skin brought on by winter.

i also use tata harper’s resurfacing mask and juice beauty green apple brightening pads for major exfoliation.

burt’s bees cucumber facial wipes are well-stocked in my refrigerator; every morning while my coffee brews i treat myself to a quick cucumber scented facial-the puffy and fatigue instantly evicted from my eyes and jowls.

  seda

my big splurge this time of year is always a jo malone orange blossom candle.

pricey?

yes.

worth it?

hell YES!

this clementine/water lily scent is instant prozac for my disposition. some girls have that favorite red lipstick, that short black skirt, or that stiletto pump to revamp their mood….mine comes in the form of a candle.

less expensive but just as pirouette-inducing is the moss + mint candle from nest; think minty garden fresh infused with apple blossom.

the cutting garden from seda france is another one i love; with one stroke of a match a fragrant green bouquet permeates the house; one king’s lane is having a sale on a ton of seda france candles.

and i’m a total fool {both for the scent and the price} of mrs. meyer’s basil scented clean soy candle; i’m always asked about these candles when i put them out for entertaining.

nailpolish

for outside the front door i’m looking at all of the pretty, new, spring 2015 nail collections to bring the primavera party to my toes and fingers.

zoya’s spring delight practically reinvents the rainbow for your feet.

and essie‘s latest spring medley has me unpacking all my peep-toe platforms {totally appropriate for a woman 35 weeks pregnant.}

sping

i don’t require major renovation or second mortgages to ring the spring into my life; a flower here, some dryer sheets there, maybe a new coat of polish, and i’m set.

how will you be ringing in the spring m’loves?

wishing you a weekend of hop in your step and posy in your play.

see you on the other side of sunday.

love,

katie
