vegetarianism

it started with an innocent text..

March 18, 2014

so last week the goddess {aka raquel perry, the fitness stalker, my girl crush,} sent me a text:

text

i mean i was raised not to be rude.

and since when am i to turn down a homemade, crispy-riced, i need two napkins please, confection?

especially when they were hand-delivered, hot-pants clad, mid my nut-house, DMX-themed spin party, last saturday morning.

that’s real, i’ll-hold-your-hair-when-you-puke, friendship.

{luckily raquel has super short hair though.}

famished from my hip-hop-palooza on a bike, there was no ladylike postponement, waiting until i got home before i face dived into my gifted, baggie of sweet, crunchy goodness; with crispies in my lashes and pretzel crumbs in my belly button, i bare teethed texted raquel, demanding the recipe….

textthe thing is….i have been known to “demand” recipes in the past….

remember beautiful dena?

i was hell-bent on getting her chicken soup recipe too; stalked her new jersey ass, threatened to kidnap a twin or two of hers, and held up traffic on a bridge for a day until she gave it up.

she did.

but then i read how complicated it was {it really wasn’t but i’m an imbecile,} and the liklihood of me making chicken soup NOT from a can is faint.

but i promise to share her recipe soon with y’all.

cooking (1 of 1)

but these krispy things…{is krispy with a “k” or a “c”?,} really did read easy {you saw the text.}

ricepuffs (1 of 1)

there are the rice puffs….

brown rice puffs, unsweetened.

3 cups.

pretzel (1 of 1)

 spelt pretzels….

1 cup {chopped}

now i have NO idea why they have to be spelt; raquel specified spelt. i don’t know what spelt is; if you ask me “spelt” sounds like a species of fish. but if raquel tells me to eat used baby wipes, you bet i’m going to chow down on a cost-co sized box of those pre-moistened, not-so powder fresh anymore, towelettes…have you seen this woman?

cornsyrup (1 of 1)

1/2 cup brown rice syrup….

this makes it sweet.

{yes, i may or may have not added more than she said….i did.}

taste (1 of 1)

1/2 cup peanut butter…..

“save the rest of the jar for later date emotional eating binge”….i do—-{these are my notes, not raquel’s}

mess (1 of 1)

1/2 tsp of vanilla….

2 cups for the floor and the counter.

texter (1 of 1)

and this is why i hate to cook: directions like “a pinch of salt.”

what the f*^! does that mean?!!?!?

“a pinch” is a very partial amount….especially when it comes to salt….a pinch of salt to me, someone who thinks there’s too much salt in the salt-free food i buy, is one, micro, unseen speck of that tangy, white poison….yet if you were to ask me what a “a pinch” of sugar looks like, i’d need a forklift to show you.

give me metrics people!

finished (1 of 1)

nevertheless they turned out delicious…albeit looking a bit yellow and dijon mustard-ish…

hunkiest liked them, so that’s all that mattered.

maggots (1 of 1)

is it just me or does anyone else think of the maggot scene from poltergeist when you look at this plate?

i told raquel that was my only gripe; from far away i thought i’d made worm casserole.

photo (2)

apparently i bought the wrong kind of cereal; her fancier, euro-erewhon are less larva-looking.

priscilla also gave her seal of approval. she loves when i cook; especially with peanut butter, she knows she’ll get the spoon.

but really, if you’re looking for a delicious, healthier alternative to rice crispy treats, and you’re not allergic to peanuts you should try this super-easy recipe.

happy cooking m’loves.

shut the fridge

November 19, 2013

so here she is, i know you’ve been waiting for this one.

ever since my gorgeous and divine friend, raquel perry aka the fitness stalker, appeared in my girl crush series, i’ve had many people refer to that “amazing,” “beautiful,” and “inspiring” woman.

she is all of those things and more.

lucky us we get to see what is in this bionic’s woman’s fridge:

headshot

When the lovely Ms. Osumi honored me with her request to write about, and photograph the innards of my fridge, I must admit, I was nervous. Not nervous because I don’t enjoy letting peeps in on my lifestyle, or habits, (in fact I will gladly bore you to tears with the details of my beloved green smoothie,) but because I was sure that everyone expects my refrigerator contents to be nothing but lettuce, kale and alfalfa sprouts.

eppp

I do buy a lot of greens. Kale, spinach, chard and broccoli are always in the crisper. Organic is a must when it comes to these gems. But, there is certainly more than the green stuff. Allow me to give you a guided tour:

fridge (1 of 1)

Firstly, my green smoothies are a part of my daily routine. So much so, that when we went to the desert for Spring Break with the kiddos, I packed my trusty Vitamix. I usually use a base of the So Delicious unsweetened vanilla coconut milk. Sometimes I opt for unsweetened vanilla hemp milk, or organic unsweetened vanilla almond milk. I add in frozen banana, Warrior Brand Raw vegan protein, and flax seeds, chia seeds, and tons of greens. There is no special recipe, I like to add in as much of the green stuff as possible, since thanks to the fruit and protein powder, you really cannot even taste it.

fridge (1 of 1)-2

Next on that top shelf, is Veganaise. This mayonaise-like spread has won over everyone in my family, including the picky hubby and kiddos. Same goes for Earth Balance spread that I swear is as yummy as butter. K.T.’s Gingerade Kombucha are a must have, as are Ritual Wellness organic cold pressed juice. Spicy Greens is my current fave. The Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar Limeade are also in large supply after Ms. Katie O turned me on to them!

Bread is almost always the sprouted Ezekiel bread, flax-seed version. Delish, extra fiber and again, a hit with the entire fam.

I also have on hand the cinnamon raisin sprouted grain English muffins. This is a handy breakfast for the kiddos with a dollop of Earth Balance spread and honey. In fact the tortillas by Ezekiel are also always in the fridge.

While I do not eat meat of any kind, except the occasional fish, my family does. All meats are organic and grass-fed when possible. I always have black beans that I have made with lots of garlic, and onions, or some chickpeas at the ready for a quick addition to a salad or meal.

RP’s makes a gluten-free fresh pasta made from brown rice flour. I especially adore the no-bake lasagne sheets, which make for any easy veggie lasagne that I pack as many vegetables into as I can. I also make the fusilli with hemp seed pesto.

I am currently loving “White Girl Salsa,” in Mild Tomatillo flavor.  If the name weren’t chuckle-worthy enough, then the flavor will win you over. Even though I am part hispanic, I am a wimpy white girl when it comes to spices. This salsa is perfect for my mild hotness.  😉

fridge (1 of 1)-3

This time of year you will always find organic Honeycrisp apples in the fridge. Either eaten alone, or made into a baked apple, dusted with cinnamon and stevia, and finished off with a bit of plain coconut milk yogurt, they never fail to satisfy.

Cheese is not off-limits for me. In fact, I LOVE it. It was far easier eliminating meat from my diet than it would be to cut out mozzarella, feta or goat cheese. I just make sure they are organic varieties.

Finally, let’s check out the freezer. Frozen grapes, (to nosh,) frozen berries, bananas, spinach, and pineapple and frozen wheatgrass cubes are always stocked and ready to be made into a smoothie. I buy organic ice cream for the kiddos and Matt, and So Delicious brand coconut ice cream for me. Chocolate is the flavor I have been grabbing lately, and I top it off with a spoonful of peanut butter or Nuttzo.

Bottom line is, that while I may have the reputation for never eating anything “fun” I enjoy everything I eat. Food enjoyment is a funny thing. Once your body learns to taste real food, limited processed foods, and not tons of added sugars, it not only adjusts, but learns to love the taste of things in their more pure state. Same goes for water consumption. Start lugging and chugging that water bottle everywhere you go, and it becomes second nature.

yog

I have been through so many “diet phases,” and have found that the best diet, is not a diet at all. It’s one’s daily way of life that is sustainable, and not overly complicated. Eat real food, limit processed foods, and added sugars, and you can’t go wrong. Our bodies are such amazing machines that we ask so much of on a daily basis, doesn’t it make sense to fill it with the best fuel possible? And if eating organic, drinking alkaline water and limiting foods that are processed helps with my longevity and that of my family, then I am all for stacking that deck in our favor.

it’s friday…i’m in love….

October 4, 2013

lovenotie

happy friday indeed!

last week i wrote that sweet, simple love notes from friends, even when they are on post-its, make me silly happy. my beloved janet took my words to heart, and her words of wisdom have brightened my week every time i’m at my bathroom sink.

here are a few of the other friday gems, i am falling madly in love with:

Seven-Day-Miracle

at coffee, my always-in-the-know friend, mary jo matsumoto, gifted me a bag of non-toxic, vanilla bean scented, hair luxury. mary jo is all about the surprise, non-occasion gifts….

original mineral‘s mantra reads: “healthy hair begins when it’s free from stress. reduce the chemical overload.”

and that’s exactly what they’ve created: chemical and toxin-free products that are gentle and effective.

my less than pampered tresses are now fountain of youth hydrated and giddy with bounce. i immediately noticed a difference in the feel and look of my hair from using original mineral all week.

the seven-day miracle and original detox are my new must-haves.

10029554504_700ab77780_o

speaking of mary jo and all her fabulosity…..next week, on thursday, october 10th from 11am-3pm, she will be having a trunk show at laguna supply, here in laguna beach.

this is not to be missed. mary jo’s fall bags are receiving major rave reviews.

i’ve been in deep smit with mjm bags since the first time i laid eyes on one of her to-die-for clutches, i literally carry my “cloudy with a chance of surf” clutch EVERYWHERE!

besides fall bag shopping this trunk show is a great opportunity to give the girls at laguna supply a “hello.”  i hear their stock of isabel marant is tears of joy inducing.

afterlight (19)

i am absolutely loving that my trader joe’s calla lilies are now going on 2 weeks. they cost $6.99 a bunch {photo shows one half a bunch,} and come in the prettiest shades of plum, pink, and creamy white.

these milk-bottled bouquets currently punctuate every room in the house; softening and pleasing the mood of all of us nearby. yes, even the beasts.

broccoli

so i’m attempting the october unprocessed challenge posed by the blog, “eating rules.”

the rules are simple: no processed foods for the whole month of october.

i like to kid myself that just because i’m eating organic, non-GMO foods, i am a healthy eater.

WRONG!

that organic salad dressing, tomato sauce, & vegan vegetable soup were processed somewhere at a factory with ingredients, albeit organic, that help preserve the life and enhance the taste of said product on the shelf.

in no way do i expect to ace this challenge, i can’t remember the last time i saw an ice cream tree? but i am trying to commit as close as i can.

last night we ate the tastiest roasted broccoli.

yes, that i even cooked myself?!?! pigs were flying all throughout my kitchen.

just broccoli, olive oil, chopped shallots, and sea salt {all organic} in the oven for 30 minutes.

delicious and super easy.

Screen Shot 2013-10-04 at 5.10.50 AM

and finally i am in hopelessly devoted, in love with jessica husami and coast magazine for the supremely generous and flattering write-up in their current, october issue, where i am named as one of orange county’s “hidden gems.”

i have been in a constant state of blush. thank you so much for your sweet talk.

so tell me kittens; what are you currently loving on this first, fine friday in october?

see you on the other side of sunday m’loves.
