Christmas

a weekend in winter….

December 17, 2013

park

i think the perpetual sunshine here in southern california has marred our already balmy brains.

last week, we had a slight change in weather, known to the rest of the country as this thing called “winter,” and us angelenos responded with a chicken-little like panic, waving our mittened hands in the air, yelping out “it’s in the 60’s! it’s in the 60’s! it’s in the 60’s.”

i heard fema had to come in with disaster relief; mainly in the form of cashmere pashminas, ugg boots, and caramel salted lattés.

meanwhile this weekend, in utah, where i was playing my most mannerly “bosses wife” part, it was a toasty 13 degrees.

camel coats and long-johns were de rigueur.

boot

and i was faced with the hard, cold truth, that as much as i love my riding boots, they’re not snow boots;

nor are they really for riding either….

pomegranate bellinis coaxed out the merry in my frost-bitten, bah-humbug soul.

and we of course made a stop to atticus’ book shop in park city; my only must-see of the granite state.

old, new, and rare, atticus stocks books that get you to linger for hours.

and they’re vast and creative espresso bar, think red velvet lattés + cookies and cream mochas, also lends to dawdling amongst shelves lined with limited edition david foster wallace and vintage cooking books.

{btw did you see jason segel will portral DFW in the upcoming film, the end of tour, a biopic chronicling DFW’s book tour for infinite jest.}

bath

i spent more time in the tub than i did exploring our funky hotel.

this was the only spot where i wasn’t freezing my woolen socks off; in fact i tried to get hunkiest’s christmas party moved to our bathroom so i could stay warm and still participate in the merriment, but he wasn’t having it.

why so fancy you ask?

some people dress up for parties, some dress up for the theater, i dress up for cheese plates.

this showpiece of stinky, artisanal happiness rocked my salt lake city world!

pago, a farm-to fresh, local+ sustainable sourced restaurant, located in a dreamy, early 20th century, brick building, delivered a rapturous, hands up in the air-inducing cheese plate. with one yummy combo bite of beehive’s salty promontory, a smidge of fresh blackberry jam, and topped with their homemade walnut/mustard sweet compote, i was ready to myself to the nearest mormon temple for utah conversion.

and as much as i complained about utah’s arctic weather, this 80 degree-plus hoo-haa we’ve got going on right now in southern california is a bit ridiculous…much like us californians…

it’s friday, i’m in love….

afterlight (86)

good morning lovers!

friday happy to you.

pull up a chair and grab your mug; i’m ready to dish on all things favorite.

afterlight (85)

i truly am cozied up here, piano’ing my keyboard whilst sneaking sips from one of my favorite coffees.

it’s that time of year: red cups, silver bells, and the release of holiday blend from peet’s coffee...

these beans are the perfect coupling of nuttiness and spicy in a dark, slap-you-in-the-face roast.

adding to this morning tryst is an article i read yesterday stating that coffee is quite the unknown anti-ager.

can i get a “hell yeah!!”?

sunday

speaking of anti-aging, i’m obsessed with all products sunday riley. i waited a good 6 months before reviewing sunday’s a-grade material, raw, vegan-friendly line. it IS pricey but i had heard so many rave reviews i had to check it out.

i am not disappointed. her clean & green in technology have given me noticeable results in fine lines, suppleness, and hydration; meaning i can actually see a difference.

i am officially addicted to her bionic anti-aging cream and start-over eye gel .

afterlight (87)

and speaking of addictions, remember when i told you about my crack habit?

well it just soared to toronto mayor levels.

at that aforementioned peet’s coffee, also known as my dealer, they are now offering chocolate covered oreos during this over-fed holiday season…..as if we’re not already getting our adequate supply of sugar and fat.

unfortunately the smack is only available in-store. you gotta get your strung-out self to your local shop for that afternoon fix.

i can’t believe, but running and i have yet to break up.

it’s been a week.

but along with my newfound pavement pounding i’m also “rolling” more.

just as important to stretching, deep fascia therapy, either on a foam roller or manually with massage, is crucial to joint health.

every day and before bed i’ve been using my yoga tune up balls to alleviate much of the pain i experience in my back, hamstrings, feet, hand and knees.

it hurts like a mother, i’m talking tears sometimes, but the effects are nirvanic and can be felt right away.

jogger (1)

as a reward for sticking with my holiday hustle {albeit 6 days} i treated myself to these satin jogging pants from vince, and yes…i may even jog in them….in heels.

they are über comfortable, flattering, and what i love most is the tuxedo stripe down the side of the leg.

FAN-CEEE!

and then lastly for the friday favorites…for those of you who didn’t already see it yesterday on facebook, i am FIENDISH for the talking pet app.

if you have pets and you text/email photos of your pets excessively, then this is the app for you.

so like priscilla said, “happy weekend!”

wishing you caffeinated dreams and chocolate-covered smiles.

see you on the other side of sunday m’loves.

man down…..

December 28, 2012

powderyesterday morning, in a second position turn out, amid a room full of lithe, breathy, lululemon’d beauties pulsing, squeezing, scooping, and tucking their limbs into lengthened, toned, swan-like knockouts; i noticed the already icy cold room get even chillier, and the lights begin to flicker and change colors.

simultaneously, something in my stomach, a hyper-active, adderall addicted alien or caged, mixed-martial arts fighter perhaps, was trying to break free from the confines of my wannabe pulled in, contracted, and soon to be vomitous abdomen.

santaoh the joys of the stomach flu. suddenly you’re the only one in the universe who has ever been sick, and you’re convinced you are the sickest you’ve ever been in your entire life.

it’s always when i’m on my bathroom floor, trying to repress heaves and hallucinations, that my catholic upbringing suddenly returns, causing me to question my sins {bloody marys on christmas eve} and god’s retribution {fever and chills.}

talk about a giant lump of coal in my stocking.

25525487164i’m lying low today, still on the mend, resting up for the weekend.

i want to be as strong as possible for my last classes of the year.

they are typically my most favorite, most fun of the year; the energy is always off the charts. i hope i see some of you in them. i’m even subbing a special new year’s eve cycle class on monday morning. come play!

what about you m’loves? are you staying healthy? what are your plans for this final twenty-twelve weekend happy?

see you on the other side of sunday.

love,

katie
